DATA:
It is important to keep the DATA in a centrally located directory on the hard drive. Therefore: EVERYONE should save their data in Documents (MAC lingo) or My Documents (Windows lingo). You can make sub-directories within this data directory to further organize your data.
If you are lucky enough to have access to a file server - ask your network administrators or lab personnel where your personal directory is located. At my university - all students have a homes or Z directory that is saved on a file server.
BUT ALL OF YOUR DATA SHOULD BE INSIDE OF
ONE FOLDER OR DIRECTORY
Worst case scenario: sometimes if a hard drive does CRASH, certain utilities occasionally allow you to try and retrieve information from the hard drive. If all of your data is in one place it is much more likely you can backup your important files. If your data is scattered all over the hard drive, you will probably spend precious seconds searching for the information.
