Security:
Not only is it important to understand what file extensions are used for, it can also help you to avoid "accidentally" introducing viruses onto your computer.
Lack of education (or possibly just not paying attention) caused many people to open the LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs virus. It just showed up as LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT when the "hide file extensions for know types" was checked in the folder options window (which is the default behavior of Windows Explorer.) It appeared innocent enough by looking like a text file that had some good reading included. Actually it was a dangerous computer program written in VBScript and infected thousands of computers when it was introduced in early 2000.
With attachments arriving in your InBox ever day, you should think twice before opening any files - especially if they are executable files and especially if you do not know the author.
