Security Basics: What Is A Threat?

Back

A threat is any tool or technique that can be used to damage the data stored on a network, server or desktop, or to compromise those resources for unauthorized use. From a common virus to organized industrial sabotage, the tools used to attack online resources encompass a broad, ever-evolving spectrum.

The sophistication of these threats continues to increase, combining virus and attack technologies into a single, rapidly spread payload. At the same time, the technological sophistication needed to launch an attack continues to go down.

A threat, therefore, is any security situation that places the availability, integrity or privacy of online information resources at risk of attack or misuse.
